Chapter 32: To the Beastmen, Sous was Unbelievable!
“If you say something like that to humans, it would be called glib-tongued, right?” Gentle smiled. She was not completely ignorant about the human world. They had already fought a war, so how could they start a war without understanding the enemy? At the very least, she knew a little about humans.
“Ha ha…” Sous laughed helplessly. The other party didn’t believe him.
“Let’s begin.” Gentle said, “Close your eyes and feel the changes in your body. I’ll help you refine everything.”
Sous nodded.
Sous didn’t have to do anything but wait and close his eyes.
Next, Sous’ consciousness entered the darkness.
He felt only one hand move up and down his body until it stopped on his stomach. It was at that moment that Sous’ mind became conscious. But he had entered a peculiar state of mind.
…
Outside the house, what Sous didn’t know was that Mercy hadn’t left yet. Even Benevolence had come. He stood under the tree, watching the tiny glimmer of light in the room.
“If you help him like this, aren’t you afraid that he will turn around and cut off all ties with our beastman race? Humans have done many things to stab us in the back.” Benevolence stood with his hands behind his back.
“Brother, there’s a saying among humans. If we use people, we shouldn’t suspect them. I think it makes sense. If we care too much about these things, how can our tribe grow?” Mercy was not stupid. “Look at the Orcs Kingdom. How is their relationship with humans? Their trade center doesn’t differentiate between species and tribes. They can make it so big because they are tolerant enough. What we are, is called living in isolation. We will only invite destruction. We are only a tool of the Holy Land, but if we were a big country like the Orc Kingdom, would we still be a mere tool?”
Mercy was silent for a long moment. Perhaps he was thinking, or perhaps he was looking at a problem. He nodded. “You see things quite clearly.”
“Benevolence,” Mercy said. They were brothers by blood, and so called each other by names, instead of their ranks. “We can’t wait any longer. We need friends. We need an alliance army. We need the approval of other species. If we can gain the approval of Sous, our path will be broadened. His identity is laid bare for us to see. He is a trusted aide of the Empress of the Skalan Empire, Kati. He will reveal to the Empress how we treat him. If the Empress finds out, she would for sure consider having mutual cooperation with us.”
“Look at our tribe. We are really too poor. We are so poor that we can’t even gather the offerings. In the human world, if we have the means of the human world, we would have the alliance of many countries like the Orc Kingdom. We would be able to work with other countries. Then we would also grow ourselves. One day, this territory of ours will be a part of the Skalan Empire, and our Skalan Tribe will be greater in the eyes of the people.”
“Sigh.” Benevolence’s expression was complicated. “In our situation now where everything is already fixed, the most fundamental is power. That is military power. We don’t have that kind of means. Even if we have it, we might become someone else’s tool. If the Orc Kingdom comes to attack us, what will we do?”
Mercy insisted. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. You should know how powerful Sous is. It’s not just his identity. Have you seen his determination? Have you seen his talent in the palace? Have you ever understood him as a person? Do you know his determination? He can give his life for the Skalan Empire. Today, he can use his life as a stake for us. Who can do such a thing for us?”
“He’s already done this much. What we need is to trust him. It’s the only way we can go further,” Mercy reminded him.
“Yes, you are right. Perhaps, you are right.” Benevolence was silent for a long time. Mercy did not know what he was thinking. Benevolence did not retort. He had heard everything about Sous today from Mercy. This Sous was indeed a character.
“If you think that he can go far in life, I believe that his achievements will not be too low. He dares to risk his life; no, he can even forsake it. Such people are the most terrifying. Everyone is afraid of death but he is not. What if we can befriend him?” Mercy continued.
Benevolence couldn’t help but think of everything that had happened in the Skalan Empire. He thought of Sous, who had stood silently in the corner, and then suddenly stepped forward when Empress Kati had been bullied. Under the watchful eyes of so many important people, he had no fear. He had moved forward bravely, unafraid even of the Holy Saint of the Holy Land.
He dared.
He was such a person. A very good person to his own people.
Being able to have such a friend was naturally beautiful. He dared to do as he pleased, but they were afraid that everything he was doing right now was an act.
However, Benevolence had thought about this and felt that it could not be. Their Skaran Tribe had nothing. What was the use of pretending to them?
Could there be any benefits?
He was really not sure about this. The only thing he could think of was that everything Sous was doing now was to destroy their Skalan Tribe. But could he really do it alone?
‘Impossible.’
Benevolence shook his head.
He didn’t believe Sous could do that. The barrier between the Orcs and the humans couldn’t be so easily pulled down because of Sous’ efforts alone. It was a barrier between the species, a barrier between generations, a barrier from centuries of history and the laws of the forest.
In his opinion, Sous was just pretending to be merciful.
“If he continues like this, and puts his safety aside, then his achievements will definitely be unpredictable to us. If that’s the case, then you should quickly build a good relationship with him, while he hasn’t made a name for himself. He’s still weak. If we support him now and help him, then it will be like sending charcoal in the snow[1]. He and I are unlikely to advance any further. You are different.” Benevolence was clear that Sous was not friendly towards him. After all, he was the one who fought the Skalan Empire.
If Sous and himself, the murderer, could get along, then that was another story. This man was not simple. He was not simple-minded.
“Hahaha…” Mercy patted Benevolence’s shoulder. Suddenly, he thought of something.” What do you think about Gentle marrying him? In terms of human beauty, she is beautiful, but in our tribe, her beauty standards are ugly. I don’t think there are many men who want to marry her. ”
As an older brother, he was worried about his younger sibling.
